Plant Breeders’ Rights: Good Progress Vietnam Project
28 October 2011
Naktuinbouw is assisting the Vietnamese government in a project to strengthen the PVP system. Good progress has been made in the past six months.
In cooperation with the Plant Variety Protection Office of the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture, a road map is being designed for the implementation of PVP. In the meantime, technical training sessions are being organised.
Training
Two sessions on DUS testing were held in Vietnam, in cooperation with Japanese colleagues. In the first training session, Naktuinbouw experts focused on DUS testing of potatoes, whereas Japanese colleagues explained DUS testing of cucumbers. In the second session, the Naktuinbouw experts concentrated on ornamentals, mainly Anthurium, while the Japanese focus was on sweet pepper. A third training course in Vietnam still has to be planned. In addition, a group of sixVietnamese experts was trained in the Netherlands for two weeks in June 2011. The first week of training dealt with general aspects of PVP and DUS testing. In the second week, more specialised training per crop was given.
Eager learners
The Vietnamese experts are young, enthusiastic people, eager to learn and actively interested. This is an important prerequisite for the development of the PVP system in Vietnam.
